After working two jobs simultaneously her entire life, Marlene Blanco decided to take a chance and buy a ticket for the HSC Millionaire Lottery.
“Money was tight. Being a single parent, I’ve always worked two jobs to make sure my kids had what they needed,” explains Blanco, who held several positions as a unit clerk and unit assistant in various Winnipeg hospitals.
“I only bought the one ticket, but in your heart, you always hope to win,” Blanco says.
In a state of heartbreak after the unexpected passing of her adult son, Blanco couldn’t believe it when she was told her single ticket had been chosen as the winning ticket in the 2021 HSC Millionaire Lottery.
“I was completely shocked. But I like to think my son helped in pulling my ticket,” she says.
In her late 60s’, Blanco continued to work for another six months after winning the lottery before retiring and moving to LaSalle to be closer to her family.
With her winnings, Blanco supported her family and purchased a modest home with a large backyard to care for her late son’s rescued animals.
“Life is much easier now. People would say, ‘we’re not going to buy tickets, we’re never going to win’. But I have proven that wrong. Anyone can win—but you can’t win if you don’t buy a ticket,” Blanco adds.
